You’ll Never Lose Helping Others Win
I’ve been struggling lately.
I get to do what I love for a living. I get to encourage students, speak in to their lives, and help make a difference in schools all across the state of Texas, and hopefully soon, all across the country.
But I also have to put food on the table. I have to feed my family.
If a school comes to me and asks me to give a 15 minute talk, but the school is four hours away, it’s not just a 15 minute talk. It’s eight hours in the car, gas, rental car, food, and in some cases, an overnight hotel stay.
So how do I balance this? How do I balance helping others succeed and keeping food on the table?
A while back, I was having lunch with a friend of mine named Chris. Chris used to be the chaplain for the Oakland Raiders.
I was so blown away by Chris’ humility and spirit. He was the living embodiment of Proverbs 11:25. “The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.”
When you help others, you yourself are helped.
It’s hard though. maybe harder than it needs to be, to live with a “give give give” mindset.
When you have a mindset of generosity, you’re winning in the short term, and in the long term because you’re laying foundations for amazing things to come
I get too focused on short term.
When we focus on only winning in the short term, we get a fixed mindset. We start to believe that what is in front of us is all that there is. We get stingy. We reach out and grab what we want RIGHT NOW. We start taking and taking and taking, and if you’re taking, you’re not giving.
To take, you have to clench something. But to give, you have to have open hands
When we focus on the big picture, we have a growth mindset. We are focused on not just what is in front of us, but what is in the future.
Go help somebody else win today. You will never lose helping someone else win.
